In a very important move towards enhancing climate action and environmental sustainability, Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) representing over 2000 organisations across 54 African countries signed collaborative understandings with IPAM, an institution dedicated to promoting scientific research and biodiversity conservation in the Amazon and Cerrado region. The partnership was signed on the sidelines of SB64 taking place in Bonn, Germany.
Both organisations aim to tackle pressing issues such as climate change, environmental governance and social inclusion, with a focus on fostering south-south cooperation in forested areas.
They recognise the critical role that forests play in regulating climate, ensuring food security, and conserving biodiversity, emphasizing the need for sustainable and inclusive development pathways that benefit local communities
The signed memorandum of understanding indicates their commitments to share knowledge and products. By facilitating dialogue among civil society , government, academia and private sector , PACJA and IPAM aim to strengthen their efforts in advocating for climate justice and enhancing community resilience.
Some areas of cooperation will include sustainable development, climate action, and environmental sustainability, with additional topics identified based on mutual interests. This alliance represent a step forwards in addressing the interconnected challenges of climate change and social-environmental sustainability across the regions.
PACJA and IPAM aspire create a more equitable future where local communities are impowered, ecosystems are preserved, and sustainable practices are prioritised.
