July 26, 2023Somalia: The Somali Greenpeace Association (SGPA) and Natural Justice have joined forces to empower indigenous people and communities, particularly women and youth, in the fight against climate change.
SOGPA is a non-profit organization committed to promoting climate and environmental justice in Somalia and also PACJA national designated Platform in Somalia. By engaging women and youth in the training, the partnership seeks to foster a new generation of climate warriors who will play vital roles in addressing environmental challenges.
The training brought together 34 participants drawn from community elders, women, youth CSOs, and AACJ consortium partners. The legal empowerment training focused on enhancing community access to land and natural resources, supporting processes for recognizing traditional knowledge and access and benefit sharing, and strengthening community actions against harmful extractive and infrastructure projects.
Natural Justice is one of the AACJ Consortium members which strives to enhance the collective rights of people and protect the sacred relationships that indigenous peoples and local communities have with nature. Our work is informed by the values, knowledge, and self-determination of the communities whom we stand in solidarity with.
Through this partnership, the two organizations aim to equip indigenous communities with the knowledge and tools to protect their environment, assert their rights, and actively engage in decision-making processes related to environmental and climate justice.
SOGPA’s relentless campaigns and research-based advocacy, coupled with Natural Justice’s expertise in supporting community actions towards the climate crisis, create a potent combination for driving positive change.
