Rwanda Confronts Climate Crisis Head-On: RCCDN’s Vision for Resilient Communities

Rwanda, a nation known for its lush hills and progressive climate policies, is now facing intensifying climate risks—from erratic rainfall and floods to landslides and soil erosion. As these challenges escalate, the Rwanda Climate Change and Development Network (RCCDN) is stepping up with a bold, community-centered strategy to drive resilience and climate adaptation.

In a recent interview, Faustin Vuningoma, RCCDN’s National Coordinator, provided an in-depth look at how the organization is tackling Rwanda’s evolving climate vulnerabilities. He emphasized the country’s unique topography, with steep slopes and high-altitude terrain, which exacerbates the impact of heavy rainfall. “When rain falls with high intensity, it flows over the bedrock, displacing soil and destroying livelihoods. We’re witnessing more homes and infrastructure being swept away,” Vuningoma noted.

Building Awareness, Strengthening Capacity

RCCDN’s first line of defense is awareness and education. “Many local communities didn’t initially recognize that the extreme weather events they faced—floods, droughts, landslides—were tied to climate change. Our role has been to connect the dots and build a foundation for climate literacy,” said Vuningoma.

Beyond awareness, RCCDN is focused on capacity building for resilience. The organization works with 78 local NGOs to scale up sustainable land management practices, support disaster preparedness, and promote locally driven adaptation solutions. “We help communities withstand and respond to the harsh realities of climate change. That’s the heart of resilience,” he added.

Looking forward, RCCDN has outlined a strategic framework that places community resilience at the center of Rwanda’s climate agenda. This includes:

• Scaling adaptation efforts to protect vulnerable communities,

• And strengthening local leadership in climate governance.

“Our top priority is empowering communities to adapt and thrive in the face of climate change,” Vuningoma emphasized. “This work is local, but the impact contributes to our national commitments and the global climate movement.”
