Kenyan youth and women plant 5000 trees to restore river banks and water catchments in Meru County

29 November 2021 | Youth and women groups in Igembe South Constituency, Meru County, Kenya have in the last few days planted about 5,000 tree seedlings to restore river banks and a wetland.

During the weekend-long activities of 27-29 Nov, PACJA Executive Director, Mithika Mwenda led Young Digital Activists promoting climate justice, Meru County University Students Association (MECUSA) and local community members to plant indigenous tree seedlings on the river banks of Ura River and Ugoti and Giika Swamps. 

Planting trees prevents erosion of soil and other fragments into rivers and streams by runoff water during rainy seasons. 

MECUSA membership is drawn from universities in Meru County.  As part of their efforts to contribute to locally-led climate action, MECUSA with support from PACJA will continue growing trees in the County to contribute to climate change mitigation..
