Keep Your Promise

The “Keep Your Promise Campaign” marks a historic initiative aimed at holding nations accountable for their commitments under the Paris Agreement, a landmark global effort to combat climate change. For the very first time, participating parties are set to take stock of their progress in meeting the goals outlined in the Paris Agreement. At its core, the campaign is driven by a desire to align global efforts towards meaningful climate action, with a particular focus on addressing and bridging the gaps in progress.

This dynamic and impactful campaign is a collaborative effort involving multiple countries, led by a passionate and dedicated group of young leaders from the African continent. Their vision is clear: to harness the power of collective action and advocacy on five pivotal issues, thereby shaping a strategic thrust to amplify their influence and advance the campaign’s overarching goals.

One of the campaign’s central objectives is to call upon the global north to honor its commitments made under the Paris Agreement. It underscores the vital importance of fulfilling these promises to ensure a sustainable and equitable future for all. Moreover, the campaign places a strong emphasis on African nations demonstrating leadership in accountability. This is to be achieved through the implementation of locally driven climate actions, which are transparent, accountable, and above reproach. The leadership of those most directly affected by the climate crisis, particularly those on the front lines, is central to this approach.

The “Keep Your Promise Campaign” is set to take action on five key critical issues:

  1.   Global Stock Take: This involves a comprehensive evaluation of the progress made by nations in meeting their climate commitments. It serves as a crucial benchmark for measuring success and identifying areas that require additional effort.
  2.   Just Transition: The campaign recognizes the importance of ensuring that climate action does not leave vulnerable communities and workers behind. It advocates for a just and equitable transition to a sustainable future.
  3.   Corporate Climate Atrocities: It is essential to hold corporations accountable for their role in exacerbating climate change. The campaign seeks to address corporate practices that harm the environment and push for responsible business conduct.
  4.   Climate Financing Gap: Adequate funding is vital for successful climate action. The campaign aims to highlight and address the gap between the financial resources needed to combat climate change and the current levels of funding available.
  5.   Global Goal Adaptation: As climate change continues to impact communities worldwide, adaptation becomes increasingly crucial. The campaign emphasizes the need to adapt to changing climate conditions and protect vulnerable populations.

In summary, the “Keep Your Promise Campaign” is a visionary and inclusive effort, led by passionate young leaders from Africa, to drive action on climate change. It challenges nations, corporations, and individuals to fulfill their commitments, ensure accountability, and strive for a more sustainable and just future for all.
