As the world gathers for COP29, the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) is steadfast in amplifying Africa’s voice and priorities on the global stage. The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan, in November 2024. The conference theme is “Solidarity for a Green Future,” which underscores the importance of unified global action to combat climate change and foster sustainable environmental practices. This hosting marks Azerbaijan’s commitment to climate action, highlighting the nation’s dedication to environmental protection and significant international recognition in this field
Africa, a continent disproportionately affected by the impacts of climate change despite contributing minimally to global emissions, approaches COP29 with clear and pressing expectations. These include increased financial support for adaptation and mitigation, recognition and reinforcement of loss and damage mechanisms, and tangible progress on ensuring fair access to sustainable energy solutions. The continent seeks commitments that will support the Just Energy Transition—a path that balances climate action with economic growth, social equity, and energy access for all.
On the third day of COP29, PACJA led impactful side events that fostered deep and candid discussions on critical issues related to access to energy and the Just Energy Transition in Africa. These engagements underscored the necessity for global cooperation to address energy poverty and support Africa’s shift towards sustainable, renewable energy sources. Such dialogues are vital for driving actionable solutions that align with the continent’s unique challenges and aspirations.
Through strategic advocacy and partnerships at COP29, PACJA continues to play a crucial role in ensuring that Africa’s climate priorities are not only heard but acted upon. The alliance remains committed to championing climate justice and fostering pathways that enable a sustainable, equitable future for the continent and beyond.
