July 18, 2023The African Coalition for Sustainable Energy Access (ACSEA) and the Pan-African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) have launched an unprecedented initiative of Youth for Adaptation Finance (YAF) which aims to empower young people across Africa to take action on climate change adaptation, one of the most urgent issues of our time.
By combining their expertise and resources, ACSEA and PACJA are paving the way for a more inclusive and sustainable future, empowering African youth to actively contribute to building climate resilience across the continent.
Speaking at the launch held in Nairobi, Kenya on July 9th, Eugene Nforngwa the Director of Programs, ACSEA, and Energy thematic lead of Just Transition and Energy Access, PACJA said that the initiative is for youth movement by youth and for youth.
“YAF is not just another project; it is a movement of young people passionate about building a climate-resilient future for Africa. Youth have a crucial role in shaping the adaptation agenda and influencing decision-makers. Young people are not only the most affected by climate change but also the most capable of finding innovative solutions and inspiring change”, he stressed.
Eugene said that the initiative will mobilize the potential of Africa’s youthful population to drive positive change on the ground and in the policy arena and organize campaigns, events, workshops, training, and dialogues to educate ourselves and others about the importance of adaptation finance.
This comprehensive strategy aims to unite all climate change initiatives across Africa, fostering coordinated efforts to effectively address the challenges posed by climate change
Speaking at the launch of YAF Peter Odhengo, the Coordinator of Africa Green Climate Finance National Designated Authorities Network (AFDAN), said, “True climate justice can only be achieved when accompanied by financial justice. Asserts that African countries must utilize the existing funds within our national budgets. “By leveraging these resources, we increase our chances of building resilience within African communities and effectively supporting adaptation efforts in the face of climate change,” he said.
A central focus of the Youth for Adaptation Finance initiative is to mobilize African youth and harness their potential as agents of change. With their unique perspective and firsthand experience of climate change challenges, African youth are equipped through capacity-building programs, training, and mentorship to drive climate adaptation initiatives in their communities. By fostering a new generation of leaders committed to addressing climate change, the initiative is building a sustainable future for Africa.
Within the narrative of this initiative, a story of resilience and determination emerges. African youth step forward, igniting the flame of change and daring to dream of a future where their continent thrives in harmony with nature. It is a challenge for you to rise above the difficulties and seize the opportunities that climate change presents. You are responsible for protecting the environment and securing our well-being. And it is your vision to create a more resilient, prosperous, and sustainable Africa for ourselves and future generations.
