Glasgow climate talks: Africa negotiators mobilize for climate finance
August 20, 2021PACJA: Pandemic Recovery Must Not Delay Climate Action
August 30, 2021More than 500 campaigners, academics, students, and other stakeholders will converge on Nairobi, Kenya, from 31 August to 12 September 2021 for the inaugural Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice (#ClimateJusticeSchool).
“Climate justice is such a critical issue in international climate change dialogues, yet the Africans at the frontline of climate change and who suffer from the most severe forms of climate injustices are often left out of the conversation,” says Dr Mithika Mwenda, Executive Director of PACJA.
“The Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice will provide a forum for strengthening African climate justice voices through sharing, learning and the cross-pollination between different stakeholders and generations.”
The long-term objective of the Summer School is to promote creative voices, especially from the youth, social and scientific innovations that tackle the vexed questions of environmental and climate justice, including intra- and intergenerational equity.
“Today, there are numerous efforts by academics, advocacy groups and other non-state actors all seeking to advance research, scholarship and mobilization on climate justice at various levels,” says Dr Mwenda.
“Universities in the North are offering specific courses and programs on Environmental and Climate Justice. Such interventions, however, are yet to take off in the Global South, particularly the continent of Africa, in a systematic and sustained manner.”
Participants will spend two weeks in lectures, discussions, breakout activities and exhibitions at the Conference Centre of the Kenyatta University. Hundreds more will join online via Zoom and other platforms.
“We have invited eminent scholars and practitioners to share their research and experiences. We have what we believe is a comprehensive program. This is a unique platform for articulating African climate justice perspectives and raising the profile of the African voice.”
