Earth Day 2021 Week long Activities
April 17, 2021Journalists Gain Skills to Advance Climate Action in Africa
April 19, 2021Tree planting in Lare Residents of the Lare sub-County of Meru has thanked the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance for choosing their area to launch this year’s tree planting exercise.
According to Ezra Sambu, the Officer Commanding Station at Lare, indiscriminate tree cutting has left the area bare and exposed to vagaries of the harsh climate. “As residents, we are very grateful for the support by the PACJA to bring the tree seedlings and leading the community in planting trees at this time when it is raining,” he said.
Muthome Mburugu, Chairman of the Kathanthu Primary School said the exercise was timely. He said residents of Lare have cut down trees without care and that it appears trees are soon to be a thing of the past in the area unless such remedial actions are taken urgently. He appealed to parents to engage their children over this holiday season in planting trees. “At least a parent should buy two seedlings for each of their children and have them plant and nurture the same before schools reopen,” he said.
Dr. Mithika Mwenda thanked residents for turning up in large numbers to heed PACJA’s call for the tree planting exercise. He said the week ahead of the Earth Day which shall be marked on the April 22 is a busy week for PACJA as the organisation is mobilising communities across the country to plant trees. “We believe such simple actions of tree planting trees will go a long way to help mitigate effects of climate change,” said Dr. Mithika.
