February 3, 2025The Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Habitat for Humanity Africa, marking a significant step toward enhancing climate justice, resilience, and sustainable urban development across Africa. The agreement was formalized during a breakfast meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, on 31st January 2025 where the partners discussed the intersection of housing, energy access, and climate change adaptation.
A Shared Vision for Climate-Resilient Communities
Speaking at the event, Rudo Kayombo, Vice President for Habitat for Humanity Africa, emphasized the crucial role of decent housing in promoting sustainable development. She highlighted the need for a holistic approach to housing, integrating essential services, climate resilience, and disaster preparedness to ensure long-term sustainability for African communities.
Echoing these sentiments, Dr. Mithika Mwenda, Executive Director of PACJA, reinforced the importance of affordable, decentralized, people-centric energy systems to support vulnerable communities at the frontlines of the climate crisis. While governments have initiated various energy access programs, challenges remain in affordability and sustainability. This partnership aims to address those gaps through complementary actions that will drive long-term impact.

Bridging Policy & Grassroots Action
Highlighting the need for strong policy frameworks and grassroots implementation, Charles Mwangi, Head of Programs and Research at PACJA, referenced the 630 Campaign, which advocates for local policy changes and adaptive strategies to drive Africa’s just transition. These efforts will ensure that climate justice principles are integrated into housing policies and urban planning.
On the implementation side, Habitat for Humanity Africa’s Interim Programs Director outlined their focus on:
- Building better, more sustainable homes
- Integrating energy efficiency into housing projects
- Strengthening climate resilience in communities
- Enhancing disaster preparedness and recovery strategies
Beyond Policy: Delivering Real Impact
This partnership extends beyond policy advocacy—it is about translating commitments into tangible, community-driven solutions. Through combined expertise, PACJA and Habitat for Humanity Africa will work together to:
✔ Advocate for climate-resilient housing policies
✔ Promote energy-efficient and sustainable housing solutions

By uniting forces, both organizations are committed to ensuring that every African has access to decent, climate-resilient housing, helping build a sustainable and just future for the continent.
