Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) and Kenya Girl Guides Association (KGGA) signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop and reinforce the mutual cooperation, collaboration, and implementation of various initiatives in favor of young girls and women.
This MoU signed on 31st of May 2023 in Nairobi Kenya, is centered on the fact that both organizations aim to develop the leadership capacity and foster locally-led climate actions of girls and young women to build a society that is more resilient to climate change.
PACJA and KGGA agreed to cooperate on areas of common interest where two parties agreed to cooperate on the discipline of common interest, utilizing PACJA’s evidence-informed advocacy work in Climate Change as an anchor in KGGA priority areas, and participation in Climate Change platforms particularly those that relate to girls and young women among other understands.
Speaking at the signing function, Fathiya Abdulmajid, the Head of Finance and Administration for PACJA who represented the Executive Director, Dr. Mithika Mwenda, welcomed the partnership and described it as another step as far as the intergenerational building approach is concerned.
She said that “This is the right time to put into practice the understandings and the MoU will promote collaboration between the two organizations and we are happy you are now on board to have this happen”.
Priscilla Gathiga, Chief Executive Officer of Kenya Girl Guides Association said that as the organization they have a big number of women and girls who are active and ready to have this partnership work. Hence from the forged partnership with PACJA, they look forward to promoting the intergenerational aspect.
Kenya Girl Guides Association (KGGA) is a national guiding association of Kenya founded in 1920 and became a full member of the World Associations of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in 1963. Their intervention has been revolving around the empowerment of young girls of different ages.
On the other hand, PACJA was established in 2008 with a vision to have a global environment free from the threat of climate change with sustainable development, equity, and justice for all. To be able to achieve this vision, building an intergenerational approach in matters of climate Justice is seen as a driver to that target.
Belinda Okungu, the Gender Focal Lead, PACJA, emphasized that enhancing intergeneration and equity approaches will help to create the next generation of champions in the area of Climate Justice.
