On the third day of COP and the fourth day of PACJA’s engagement, African Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) united under the banner of the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) to convene a significant press conference. The event drew a diverse array of journalists from across the globe, underscoring the international attention directed toward Africa’s stance on climate justice and finance.
During the press conference, African CSO representatives articulated their deep concerns regarding climate finance and conveyed a unified message: Africa cannot afford to wait passively for COP29 to address vital issues such as climate finance and the establishment of new, collectively quantified goals. Their discourse resonated with urgent appeals for concrete commitments encompassing climate finance, loss and damage, just transition efforts, adaptation measures, transparency, and accountability.
The overarching narrative emphasized that Africa’s unique vulnerabilities and pressing development needs must be recognized and prioritized. The representatives reinforced the continent’s call for equitable mitigation efforts and insisted that the world acknowledge Africa as a continent with special needs and circumstances in the climate crisis.
This press conference represented more than just an assembly; it was a powerful statement of unity and resolve, showcasing the dedication of African CSOs to champion climate justice and demand tangible action on a global scale.
