In a landmark moment for Kenya and the global community, Conference Co-Chairs in partnership with Pan African Climate Justice Alliance among other Civil Society Organizations, hosted the Pre-Conference CSO Mobilization Day and Fun Run ahead of the much anticipated 69th United Nations Civil Society Conference.
The theme of the Pre-Conference CSO Mobilization Day and Fun Run, “Catalyzing collaboration and strengthening CSO engagement in Kenya’s development agenda,” reflects the critical role of civil society in shaping a future that is inclusive, sustainable, and safe for all.
With civil society’s fundamental importance emphasized by Carol Ageng’o, Co-Chair of the UN Civil Society Conference in support of the Summit of the Future, the summit provides a unique opportunity for civil society organizations to amplify their voices and contribute to global decision-making processes.
“This summit is a pivotal moment for civil society organizations,” stated Carol Ageng’o. “Now more than ever, it is crucial for civil society to actively engage in shaping the future we want to see. The 69th UN Civil Society Conference presents an unparalleled platform for collaboration and innovation, and civil society organizations must seize this opportunity to drive meaningful change.”
The objectives of the UN Civil Society Conference 2024 align closely with the aspirations of civil society organizations worldwide. The emphasis on inclusivity, impact, and innovation reflects a commitment to advancing the goals outlined in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
Mutuma Nkanata, Executive Director of the NGO Coordination Board, emphasized the importance of civil society engagement at the summit. “Civil society plays a crucial role in driving social change and holding governments accountable,” stated Nkanata. “As Kenya hosts the 69th UN Civil Society Conference, it is essential that civil society organizations actively participate in shaping the outcomes of the summit.”
The United Nations Civil Society Conference is an event that provides an opportunity for engagement among multiple stakeholders in preparation for the Summit of the Future. It is a platform for civil society to participate in the preparation process and share their ideas that could contribute to the Pact for the Future negotiations, in line with SDG17. The conference aligns with the Common Agenda’s vision of networked multilateralism and allows civil society to speak out.
