ACCER AWARDS
African Climate Change and Environment Reporting is an initiative started by PACJA set to pay homage to African journalists who have exemplarily covered issues around environmental and climate issues. The ACCER Award Finalist Academy is a strategic plan that ensures existing, training and reward schemes remain in place and also ensure sustainability of the capacity building project. The main objectives of the awards:
- To circulate the African narrative on Climate Change in environmental discourse.
- To ensure that journalists and media houses in Africa remain properly motivated to objectively and effectively report on matters of climate change and environmental issues.
- To shine a light on best practices being employed at policy and practice in response to climate change.
- To enhance proactive media participation in African climate change discourse.
- To promote and create awareness about the opportunities existing in green investment in both public and the private sectors.
The awards were launched back in 2013. We receive hundreds of applications every year from across Africa. The process of vetting and determining the winners was a level and rigorous process and a lot of work was recognized whether or not they got an award.
Africa is realizing the impact that climate change is having on their lives and their actionable plans to mitigate and adapt to new ways of living is evidential and has been reported across the board in the various media platforms.

Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice (NSSCJ)
Nairobi Summer School started on 21st August 2021 at the Kenyatta University. The programme is set to target the talented and creative youths with an interest in climate change action. The aims of the program are targeted at closing a gap that has been existent in the global south. Lack of African contexts when handling matters of climate change and environmental issues more often than not fail to address the issues of indigenous people, women, the youth, pastoralists communities and other marginalized communities who are experiencing the effects of climate change on a very increased spectrum without having necessarily contributed to the same. A call to ensure that there is promotion of creative voices, social and scientific innovations that tackle a myriad of issues that revolve in and around environmental issues and climate change are the main objectives of the summer school.
The curriculum that was developed addresses all of the left-out publics and suitable for the various contexts that exist in the global south. The curriculum will be transdisciplinary. The school will aid in advocacy work geared towards an envisioned world that has 0 percent emissions. We look forward to having more enrolments in 2022 and create the change we want to see spearheaded by the youth activists.
ACLIAfrica Climate Legislation Initiative (ACLI)
This is an African Parliamentarians and civil society organizations capacity building and facilitation initiative led by PACJA. The aim of the initiative is to ensure that policy is well informed when it comes to matters of environmental and climate justice. The legislation of policies that are designed to ensure that NDCs are achieved in the bid to mitigate climate change and its effects in the continent.
Pan African Media Alliance for Climate Change (PAMACC)
An African association of environmental journalists. The alliance was formed in 2013 as a PACJA and has been operational since. The main objective of PAMACC is to provide support to journalists reporting on climate change. It is run by regional coordinators who continue to encourage journalists to set up national bodies that can be responsible for running the initiative more closely and achieve the alliance’s mandate. Creating and changing the climate change narrative using the African lens will provide a lot of insight in achieving less emission of natural gases and other mitigating aspects of climate change. It will provide a voice to the indigenous people, women and most especially the youth who are not only creative but also passionate and energetic.
