H.E Former President of the Republic of Malawi and Goodwill Ambassador for Tropical Cyclone “Freddy” Recovery, Dr. Joyce Banda of Malawi held bilateral discussions with Pan African Climate Justice Alliance to explore potential areas of collaboration on pertinent topics pertaining to climate change.
The bilateral discussions held- on 28th April 2023 at PACJA Secretariat centered around mechanisms for preventing climate disasters, adaptation strategies, and building resilience, among other related areas. This provided a great opportunity for stakeholders to come together and discuss ways to mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change. “For 75 years Africa was colonized, it’s wealth looted by its colonizers and with the looted minerals and materials industrialized causing us the climate change problem we are now facing. It is time for reparations” observed H.E. Joyce Banda.
Dr. Banda was appointed by H.E. Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, the President of the Republic of Malawi with a mandate to ensure that climate change and environmental protection are central in the national recovery strategy, as well as improving Malawi’s climate resilience after the devastating effects of Cyclone Freddy.
“As a leader it is painful to hopelessly watch people floating, being swept away, calling for help and cannot do anything ” H.E. Joyce Banda compassionately told guests present.
As a network of over 1,000 African civil society organizations working to promote climate justice, human rights, and sustainable development, the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance is a major stakeholder in improving climate resilience in Malawi and the region as a whole. The alliance is well-positioned to enhance the delivery of Dr. Banda’s mandate and work towards building climate resilience.
“PACJA shall use its infrastructure across the 51 countries across Africa in the count down to the Africa Climate Summit and COP28 to elevate loss and damage agenda with HE Joyce Banda as our Ambassador on L&D” Dr. Mithika
By engaging with relevant stakeholders and collaborating with organizations such as the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance, Dr. Banda is taking a proactive approach towards climate change mitigation and adaptation. It is hoped that her visit to Nairobi will result in fruitful discussions and concrete action towards building climate resilience in the region.
