Empowering Women for Climate Action: Insights from Leaders at UNEA-6 Side Event Forum

Yesterday, we had the privilege of delving into the wealth of wisdom shared by leaders from esteemed organizations such as FEMNET, Natural Justice, Africa Youth Commission, and the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance. The discussions revolved around a critical theme—the empowerment of women and their indispensable role in addressing the triple crises our planet currently faces.

The commitment of these organizations aligns seamlessly with the #UNEA6 theme of inclusive multilateralism. Their participation in this groundbreaking initiative is centered on among many pathways, amplifying community voices, building resilience against climate change impacts, as well as equipping the youth with the skills to actively engage in climate conversations at all levels.

Aligned with the thematic areas of UNEA-6, the engagement emphasized climate action, gender equality, innovative approaches, environmental education, capacity-building, and inclusive policies. A crucial part of this effort is to enhance the skills of women leaders in policy advocacy, with the ultimate aim of increasing their representation and influence in global climate policy discussions.

The initiative extends its focus to innovative approaches for environmental sustainability, with an emphasis on promoting community-driven projects led by women. This grassroots-level effort contributes significantly to climate adaptation, resilience, and sustainability, forming a vital foundation for broader international efforts. Charles Mwangi, Head of Programs and Research at the Pan-African Climate Justice Alliance told delegates, “We acknowledge the heavy brunt of climate change on women. Our approach centers on locally-led initiatives, enabling vulnerable women to access funds like those from the GCF.”

On a different but aligned note, – Natalie Mukundane, Africa Youth Commission Chairperson said,  “Despite facing the immediate impacts of climate change, young girls often find their voices overlooked. We must shift the narrative and decision-making processes to be inclusive of their perspectives.”

One pivotal aspect of this session is the challenge to societal myths through Feminist Climate Narratives, dispelling misconceptions surrounding women’s roles in climate action. The forum serves as a dynamic platform for networking and capacity-building, empowering women leaders through skill development and collaborative projects. Speaking on behalf of FEMNET, Rabeb Aloui, an Environmental Advocate passionately addressing the room said,  “Climate change knows no borders, and our response must be equally boundless. FEMNET is all about sharing the real-life experiences of African women. It’s about showing the world the strength and wisdom of African women as key players in the fight for a greener, more sustainable future.”

The forum actively explored ways of enhancing the leadership capabilities of women in advocating for impactful climate policies globally. Recognizing the importance of collaboration, the African Activists for Climate Justice aims to foster joint efforts among women leaders to drive climate adaptation projects and initiatives. The forum seeks to reshape perceptions through narratives that highlight the pivotal role of women in climate action, challenging prevailing societal myths. Reiterating this sentiment, Mercy Chepkemoi, from Natural Justice told participants, “At Natural Justice, we recognize women from indigenous & local communities as crucial in crafting environmental balance.”

This forum saw the creation of a dynamic platform that facilitates networking and capacity-building for women leaders, ensuring they are well-equipped to drive positive change. Addressing unique challenges at the community level, the forum actively works towards influencing policies that are inclusive and sustainable for the development of communities worldwide.
