September 28, 2023In an extraordinary demonstration of unity and purpose, the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) joined forces with the African Artists for Climate and Justice (AACJ) team, the Kenya Platform for Climate Governance (KPCG), and Vice Versa Global to orchestrate a community festival that transcended boundaries and ignited a spark of change. This exceptional event brought together a kaleidoscope of voices, including grassroots communities, children, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and artists, all converging under one resounding banner: the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). With a theme as timely as it is pertinent, “Localizing Global Goals,” this festival became a rallying cry for collective action during the action week for SDGs, coinciding with the 78th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in the heart of New York. This extraordinary gathering not only celebrated the shared commitment to the SDGs but also served as a powerful reminder that together, we can achieve a sustainable and equitable future for all. The event was a testament to the power of collaboration and community engagement, allowing participants to delve into various aspects of the SDGs.
The festival commenced with sessions that explored the current status of the SDGs in Kenya. Key stakeholders and experts shared insights into the progress made and the challenges ahead. Professor Kivutha Kibwana, Former Governor of Makueni County, emphasized, “Our commitment to the SDGs is not just about meeting targets; it is about transforming lives and building a sustainable future for all.”
A critical discussion followed, highlighting how the SDGs are not merely development goals but also catalysts for peace and social cohesion in Kenya. Speakers delved into the interconnectedness of sustainability and harmony within communities. Ann Tek, the National Coordinator for Kenya Platform for Climate Governance (KPCG), remarked, “The SDGs provide a framework for addressing the root causes of conflict and fostering a culture of peace.”
The festival provided a platform for open dialogue, where attendees actively engaged in discussions on the challenges, opportunities, and future strategies for advancing the SDGs in Kenya. Philip Dinga, the Advocacy Lead at AACJ, eloquently stated, “Communities are at the heart of sustainable development. When we empower them with knowledge and resources, we unleash their potential as agents of change.”
Throughout the day, the SDG Village provided a dynamic space for organizations to exhibit their work in various communities. Attendees had the opportunity to witness firsthand the impactful projects and innovations driven by these organizations. Nicera Wanjiru, SDG Village Exhibition Coordinator, expressed, “The SDG Village is a testament to the dedication of grassroots communities in turning the SDGs into tangible realities.”
The festival showcased the vital role that platforms like KPCG and AACJ play in interacting with grassroots communities and connecting their discussions to the national and global levels. These platforms act as bridges, allowing the voices of grassroots communities to resonate on a global stage. Marina Ponti, UN SDG Action Campaign Director, emphasized, “Events like these exemplify the importance of inclusive, community-driven approaches to achieving the SDGs. By connecting grassroots efforts to national and global discussions, we can truly make a difference.”
Through platforms like KPCG and AACJ, these voices will continue to shape the global dialogue on sustainable development, paving the way for a more equitable and sustainable future.
