October 5, 2022The Pan African Climate Justice Alliance, Morocco chapter hosted the Climate Justice Torch on Saturday in Casablanca to galvanise voices of the grassroot citizens towards th 27 Conference of Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Summit set for Egypt in November 2022.
According to designated national coordinator, Mr Said Chakri, the CJT provided an opportunity for meaningful engagement and participation of the ordinary Moroccans into the climate change processes with policy players.
In the recent past, there has been concern among citizens with the increasing loss of biodiversity in Morocco. This, participants noted has been due to increasing human pressures as well disrupted weather patterns.
The climate justice torch campaign is giving the Moroccan climate activists an opportunity where they will be generating and exchanging ideas on how we can continue to build resilience of grass root communities that have been affected by the climate crisis.
The climate justice torch campaign march took place on the backdrop of the 3rd Edition of the Young Climate Week that takes place every year. This year the march took place in Casablanca, Morocco.
The young climate week aimed to shape public opinion, accelerate the change of individuals’ behaviors but also the practices of some actors and institutions towards climate change and the way they respond to the effects of climate change.
The CJT campaigns would not have come to Morocco at a better time. According to Chakri, already, the Moroccan government has announced a state of emergency on water.
“It is necessary to move towards a new model of water management that takes into account the urgency of resilience and adaptation required by the extreme effects our country is experiencing,” he said adding that the country is living through real impact of climate change
