November 4, 2022Receiving the Climate Justice Torch was General Secretary of the All-Africa Conference of Churches Rev Fidon Mwombeki at the Pentecostal Convention Centre in Kasoa, Ghana.
Highlighting key issues that the Climate Justice Torch campaign had gathered on its journeys since its launch in Gabon in August during the Africa Climate Week, Charles Mwangi, the Head of Programme and Research, PACJA noted that through the leadership of young people, the campaign has provided a platform for women, young people, indigenous people, pastoralists fisher folk and their movements as well as children in the frontline of the climate crisis to amplify their issues, share their propositions and convene dialogues with policy makers.
He added that the future of the thousands of young people attending and participating at the All-Africa Youth Congress and millions of others in the continent are compromised by the inaction to address climate change crisis.
The crisis poses a great threat to the environment and to the economic growth as well as sustainable development.”
Handing over the Torch, the youths expressed gratitude to have been involved in the climate justice torch campaign.
During the opening session after reception of the torch, youth gave a powerful message dubbed “My letter to African Heads of State, religious leaders, parents and to fellow youth” and citied the negative impacts of climate inaction.
They resolved and pleaded with government leadership to allocate funds that are aligned within the Nationally Determined Contributions and implementation of these NDCs to reduce the narrative of poor or lack of implementation of policies designed specifically to solve the issues of unemployment, green jobs and increased opportunities for the youth.
From Ghana, the Climate Justice Torch will be headed to COP27.
