This historic event is set to run until September 6th, coinciding seamlessly with Africa Climate Week, marking a pivotal moment for climate action across the continent.
In his captivating opening speech, President Ruto cast a vision of a future driven by global partnerships dedicated to African prosperity, inclusive growth, and a sustainable planet for all. His words resonated, underscoring the paramount importance of this summit, poised to catalyze unprecedented climate action.
With Africa heralded as the linchpin in advancing global decarbonization, President Ruto emphasized the urgency for all to contribute to this generational challenge. Africa, often referred to as “the key,” now stands at the forefront of the battle against climate change.
President Ruto broke with tradition by challenging the typical “North vs. South” climate discourse. He urged climate stakeholders worldwide to unite, shifting from division to collaboration in the quest to end the climate crisis. This call for unity echoes the summit’s core theme: collaborative responsibility.
During the summit’s opening remarks, Dr. Mithika Mwenda underscored the need for outcomes that not only facilitate dialogue but also restore hope and dignity to millions affected by climate impacts. His plea resonated with the realities of African people, emphasizing the imperatives of climate justice.
In his speech Dr. Mwenda further called upon the African Union, the Kenyan government, and all delegates to ensure that the summit conveys a resolute message – one that doesn’t absolve industrialized nations of their historical and current responsibilities but rather reaffirms their commitment to substantial emissions reductions and support for vulnerable regions, especially in Africa.
Ambassador Josefa Sacko, Commissioner for Agriculture, Rural Development, Blue Economy, and Sustainable Environment, emphasized the critical role of resources and capacity-building in Africa’s green transition. She stressed the importance of inclusive economic growth and value addition, moving beyond the export-driven model that has left Africa vulnerable.
Anne Samante from MPIDO urged the international community to prioritize indigenous people’s rights and channel resources toward adaptation and resilience for marginalized communities on the frontline of the climate crisis.
