February 6, 2024African Climate Diplomacy Bared: Insights from Multistakeholder Forum on COP28 and COP29 Strategy
February 13, 2024From 12th to 13th February 2023, the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) will join ClimDev -Africa and other partners in a two-day Multistakeholder forum that will examine the outcomes of COP28 and strategy for COP29 which will take place in Baku, Abseron, Azerbaijan from 11-22 November 2024.
The gathering takes place ahead of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government which will convene in Addis Ababa Ethiopia from 17 to 18 February, under the theme “Building resilient education systems for increased access to inclusive, qualitative, lifelong and relevant learning for Africa”.
The assembly takes place in a polarized geopolitical context where countries are facing social, political, economic, security, health, and environmental upheavals, all converging to test international solidarity in times of calamities, and the tenacity of Institutions such as the African Union and the United Nations.
Beyond that, the AU summit takes place a few months after the world leaders, UN frameworks, Civil society organizations, private sectors, and other partners concluded the 28th Conference of Parties in Dubai- UAE. This conference raised mixed reactions, especially on the side of Africa, the most affected continent affected mostly by the adverse impacts of Climate Change.
The convening pertains to ClimDev-Africa, which has been given the responsibility by Heads of State and Government to address the gaps in the observational records of past, current, and future climate variations. To fulfill its mandate, the initiative has been collaborating with various stakeholders and partners, including the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA).
The initiative has been facilitating participants’ interactions with key stakeholders attending the AU Summits, and positions climate action as a key issue of focus in the competing priorities in the Summit. Part of the facilitation is the organization of the annual Climate Change and Development in Africa Conference (CCDA).
PACJA has been collaborating with mandated institutions to facilitate these discussions on climate change to complement the African leaders’ efforts to represent African voices and concerns in the international arena.
Regarding this matter, in the current year, Addis Ababa City will play a crucial role in contemplating Africa’s discussions on climate change throughout 2023. This includes the Africa Climate Summit, which was authorized by the Assembly of Heads of State and will be jointly hosted by the African Union Commission and the Government of Kenya.
