Critical Minerals: A Curse or Blessing? Africa Stakeholders Debate in South Africa
August 22, 2024Strengthening Climate Resilience – Key Outcomes from the AFDAN Nairobi Forum
August 26, 2024The second quarter has been a vibrant period for The Alliance, filled with regional convenings and national engagements across various platforms. We’ve aligned our efforts with key global observances, including World Earth Day and World Health Day, and actively participated in significant international gatherings such as the 77th World Health Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, and SBSTA in Bonn, Germany.
However, our thoughts are with those impacted by the devastating floods in the East African region, a stark reminder of the intensifying effects of climate change, exacerbated by the El Niño phenomenon. The critical need for climate action, adaptation finance, and the operationalization of the loss and damage fund has never been more evident. In this context, the inaugural meeting of the Loss and Damage Fund’s Board commenced took place in Abu Dhabi, UAE, with the Santiago Network on Loss and Damage proposing Geneva, Switzerland, as the fund’s headquarters.
Despite these global efforts, the harsh reality remains: Africa is disproportionately affected by climate impacts. The urgency is palpable, particularly in East Africa, where communities are fighting for survival against the relentless forces of nature.
As we continue to face the global repercussions of climate change, we must respond with decisive action. Urgent aid, sustainable infrastructure, and global solidarity are not just necessary—they are essential. We must bridge the gap between rhetoric and action for the sake of those most vulnerable to our planet’s upheaval.
As we look ahead on the Road to COP29, we carry forward the legacy of past COP meetings, staying committed to the goals of the UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement. Our advocacy strategy remains firmly aligned with these objectives while staying true to our core focus areas. We hope this issue provides you with a transparent and engaging overview of our work. Enjoy!
