African CSOs to reject Glasgow Climate Pact

Cairo 17 December 2021:The ongoing discussion of the African Climate Activists taking place in Cairo Egypt, the African civil societies coalescing under the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance point to likely hood of the African CSOs rejecting the outcomes of the 26^th Conference of Parties to the UN Convention on Climate Change held in Glasgow, UK, dubbed Glasgow Climate Pact. The activists have expressed disappointment that the COP did not favor the continent.

The climate activists said the focus of COP26 talks did not highlight Africa’s issues. “COP26 outcomes were deficient, inadequate and needs action to be charged.” they said.

They noted that the COP26 did not adhere to the spirit of the Paris Agreement and thus did not go far enough to address the issues of emission reductions as envisioned to be below 1.5 degrees.

They noted that the issue of global warming affects Africa more than it affects the rest of the world and therefore lack of action is a cause for alarm. They said that COP 27 which is set for Egypt in 2022r should address the issue.

Augustine Njdamnshi the chairperson for technical and political committee PACJA said that the African delegation in Cairo have asked COP27 presidency to consider having an African People’s Day to showcase Africa’s common position in matters of advocacy for climate change in the world.

The Egyptian government have been looking into ensuring that there is acknowledgment of African special circumstances in their bid to reduce emissions and transition into energy. 

By all indications, unless there is a change of tack, it is more likelihood of the African Climate Activists rejecting the pact as it stands. However, the talks are still ongoing.
